With the support of the Public Broadcast Service (PBS), the Foundation grant made possible the production of the weekly television show "NOW" with Bill Moyers.

In collaboration with Public Brocast Service (PBS), "NOW" with Bill Moyers features documentary reporting and in-depth one-on-one interviews on contemporary events, issues and ideas. This grant to the local public television station helped support this new weekly show.

Economic Policy Institute

EPI works to strengthen democracy by providing people with the tools to participate in the public discussion on the economy, believing that such participation will result in economic policies that better reflect public interest.

A grant from the Foundation increased and improved the quality of research and analysis that is disseminated into the mainstream.

By supporting this research capacity, EPI strives to make a difference in national policy debates, the outcomes of which impact on tens of millions poor and working families. Some specific issues include retirement, income security, welfare reform, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and education.

This grant is payable over two years to support progressive economic reform through education and awareness, and contributions to public policy initiatives. Topics of interest include healthcare, higher education and the impact of economic security on women and children.

The Institute for Policy Studies, formed in 1963, is the nation's oldest multi-issue progressive think tank. The Institute has worked with social movements to forge viable and sustainable policies to promote democracy, justice, human rights, and spanersity. The Foundation grant is for two specific programs related to social justice and civic engagement.

Project 540 - Providence College

Project 540, an initiative funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by Providence College seeks to bridge many gaps through national efforts employed within high schools, encouraging civic interest and involvement.

Project 540 selected nearly 270 public high schools across the country to be at the forefront of this national endeavor. In addition to promoting the development of the high school curriculum and project plan the Foundation grant helped implement the Project 540 program in the Central Texas area.

The grant allowed this very small rural school district near Waco to purchase graphing calculators to assist the students in the Texas state TAKS exam.

The Audre and Bernard Rapoport Academy

This school was created to educate a population of children whose families are typically well under the median income.

The grant provided financial support for salaries for new staff, assistance with science lab equipment and technology at both campuses, and miscellaneous program supplies.

University of Texas at Austin

The Rapoport Service Scholarship awarded twelve Liberal Arts freshmen a three-year scholarship. The scholarship is up to $10,000 per year and includes a laptop computer.

A unique feature of this grant includes a requirement for the student to participate in community service during the summer. By working with a nonprofit organization, a student gains knowledge about this sector and the value that these agencies provide.

Students are able to select the nonprofit group of their choice, which benefits from their assistance. The students then write about their experience with others in their cohort group, and work together in a variety of service projects during the year.

To increase awareness about a blood disorder that affects all ages, Central Texas Sickle Cell Anemia organization gives educational presentations and distributes information to school groups.

The Foundation grant was used to provide assistance in the continuation of education awareness programs to schools through pamphlets and flyers.

One of the goals of Brazos AHEC is to improve the dental health of children in Waco and McLennan County through early childhood education.

The grant assisted in a portion of the salary/benefits of a bilingual Community Health worker who is the Tooth Fairy and will take the dental health program to approximately 4,000 children. The grant also assisted with miscellaneous supplies and travel.

Caritas of Waco has provided a safety net for some of the most disadvantaged citizens of Waco and the McLennan County community for 36 years. They provide emergency assistance that can include food, shelter and clothing.

Due to an increased demand, the organization moved into a larger facility. The Foundation's grant assisted in the renovation of this facility.

Central Texas Senior Ministry

This matching grant assisted in funding for 3,846 Meals on Wheels (15 seniors per day for one year) to Waco's low-income homebound seniors.

Often the only nutritious meal that these elderly clients receive each day, these are served with the help of a large cadre of volunteers. Many hours are contributed in the form of preparing, packaging and delivering these meals. In addition, the Meals on Wheels participants may receive care, attention and referral to other services.

Central Texas Senior Ministry

Central Texas Senior Ministries oversees eight senior centers within the city of Waco. These centers proved a safe, meaningful place in which the elderly can participate in social recreation and activities in their own neighborhoods.

Two of the centers were in jeopardy of being shut down due to budget cuts. The Foundation's grant assisted in keeping these centers open for the senior citizens of Waco.

Faith Covenant Support Services, Inc.

Faith Covenant represents a collaborative of community churches and organizations working together to promote financial literacy, asset building, free tax preparation, and homeownership.

This grant will fund a part-time program manager for a new free tax preparation program and financial literacy coalition.

Family Counseling and Children Services

FCCS provides professional counseling services that include issues related to marriage, separation and spanorce, parent/child conflicts, blended families, school behavior, depression and anxiety, and other life adjustments.

The need for Spanish speaking counselors in the community has grown because Waco has experienced a 62% increase in its Hispanic population since the 1990 census. The Foundation's grant funded a bilingual counselor and other expenses.

Heart of Texas Alzheimer's Association

The mission of the Alzheimer's Association is to assist those with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, their families, caregivers and professional healthcare providers by offering a wide range of support programs and comprehensive education, while promoting public awareness, advocacy and funding for research.

This grant assisted in the development of a regional office in Waco which will offer core services for residents of Bosque, Falls, Freestone, Hill, Limestone, and McLennan Counties.

The multi-purpose "Mercaz Shimshon" (Hebrew for "Samson Center") is part of a $2 million capital campaign to support education and social programs. This is a joint effort between the United Jewish Communities and the Jerusalem Foundation. Grant funds were contributed in part to this Center.

Klaras Children's Center ECI

Klaras Children's Center is an early childhood intervention program that serves families with young children (birth to third birthday) who are experiencing problems with their development.

This grant helped fund equipment to work with children, for age-appropriate outings, family respite care and assorted other resources.

Lifelines Foundation for Eating Disorders

Lifelines' was established in 1999 due to the personal experience in the founder's family. Their youngest daughter was diagnosed with an eating disorder and the family was overwhelmed by the lack of information and resources not only in their Waco community, but in Texas. After securing treatment for their daughter out of state, the family decided that no other family should have to deal with this disease without the support and information that is lacking throughout the healthcare field.

The grant provided $25,000 in seed money to fund an executive director for a year, and the other $25,000 as matching funds (dollar to dollar) for basic supplies and equipment, booklets, and a small amount of travel expense.

Potter's Vessel Ministries

Many pharmaceutical companies have Patient Assistance Programs available to provide free or low-cost medications to chronically ill persons with long-term medication need, who may have difficulty paying for their prescriptions. Potter's Vessel has developed a Medication Assistance Program using software that expedites access to the available medicine. The Foundation's grant assisted in promoting the Medication Assistance Program.

Rebuilding Together of Greater Waco is an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, which is the largest organization in America dedicated to repairing and modifying homes of the needy. The grant funded a part-time executive director.

Waco Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical partnership housing program focused on bringing the community together to help very low-income families build homes for themselves and their neighbors.

This grant funded a bilingual Director of Family and Volunteer Services to help serve more clients, with the goal of empowering these families to become successful homeowners.

YMCA of Central Texas

This matching grant payable over four-years is to assist in the capital campaign for the new Doris Miller YMCA Branch to be located at Quinn Campus. The 31,000 square-foot facility will feature a new gymnasium, aerobics and fitness center, a game room for teens, and space for after school and child care programs. In addition to the new facility, the development will create new football and baseball fields as well as an outdoor pool. This $4 million dollar new facility will help revitalize the campus, which was originally home to the oldest black college West of the Mississippi.

The Foundation also awarded small grants to a variety of Waco nonprofit organizations. Some of the recipients include Camp Fire USA, Cen-Texas Community Project, Heart of Central Texas Independent Living Center, and Texas Youth Commission. These grants were used for a variety of projects, training, and basic items for the incarcerated.
